Figure Drawing

I first taught figure drawing in adult education programs, often combining students of diverse degrees of experience and interest in one class. It was therefore a pleasure at Winthrop University to teach in a well-structured three-level figure drawing sequence, building upon two strong foundation level drawing courses. Figure Drawing I was required of all BFA students, no matter their concentration area, and thus was considered as part of the Foundation Program. As such, its students learned to apply the fundamentals of drawing, line, shape, form, value, space, to the human figure and portraiture. Figure Drawing II took a big step forward and concentrated on skeletal and muscular anatomy, whereas Figure Drawing III provided more advanced students with the opportunity to fine tune these skills and apply them to a series of work of their own. While individuality and self-expression were encouraged throughout, they became the focus of the third course.
